According to the Greeks, pearls were meant to promote harmony within the marriage. It was thought that the pearls would “take away the bride’s tears.” They were a good luck charm that would bring a happy marriage without any sorrow. They also symbolised chastity, modesty, purity and love. They were associated with the goddess Aphrodite, who was born from the ocean and rose out of the water in a shell, just like a beautiful pearl. In a similar way, the Romans dedicated all of their pearls to their goddess of love, Venus.
